Carrot River Grass Fire Burns Unchecked For Days

A massive grass fire near The Pas spread for 15 miles along the Carrot River and burned for three days last week. Wind gusts to 20 mph fed flames that reached 25 feet high, threatening farms near Bracken Dam while ash blanketed streets in The Pas. Local farmers faced loss of hay and livestock habitat as authorities described the area as wilderness with duck nesting sites and muskrat habitat drying up this summer.

Fire consumes Sid Wilton farm in Carrot River Valley blaze

A grass fire started in the Saskram Marsh spread west along the Carrot River to Sid Wilton's farm, destroying six buildings and about 50000 dollars in livestock and property. Fire Protection chief Clarence Lintot opted to let it burn out, while Fire Ranger John Harapiak argued it could have been stopped with more crews.

Fire Department unhappy with KGG false alarms

The Pas Volunteer Fire Department rushed 22 members to Keewatin Community College after a 2 05 a m alarm on Friday November 19th. Deputy Fire Chief Martin Koshowski said no fire was found and noted five false alarms at the dorm in the past year.

Assault charge follows KCC student attack report

Police investigate an assault on a female KCC student around 2 a.m. on Friday November 19. A motorist ferried the student to St Anthony's Hospital, police say. Timothy Earl Isaac, 18, a KCC student, faced a provincial court on Monday charged with rape and was remanded for a week for plea and checks. The town cites fire alarm false alarms causing costs and safety concerns linked to pub night. Authorities note alcohol may contribute to false alarms and warn of dangerous exits.

CNR Storage Building Destroyed by Fire

A CNR storage building burned on Tuesday November 16 with estimated damages at least 100000. Sparks from a welder cutting rails on a 4 foot ramp started the fire as oil soaked ground beneath ignited. About 20 CNR workers moved oil drums and acid away while locomotives aided firefighting efforts.

Arbitration Board Funds for Woodworkers Union Case

A three member Arbitration Board ruled in favor of the International Wood Workers of America over the firing of shop steward Rene Richards dated from June this year. The board found the dismissal unjust and urged improved labor relations and cooperation between the union and ManFor Management. Richards was reinstated on November 18 with back pay from June 1 to November 18 minus one month.

Car Train Collision Injures Woman In Manitoba Town

A car train collision on Highway 10 Wednesday November 17 sent 74 year old Amelia Andreas of Flin Flon to hospital with undetermined injuries. Rural detachment of the RCMP reports the incident. See COLLISION page 7.

The Pas Community Forum Draws Low Turnout

The Pas Community Forum held at MBCI Auditorium drew about 56 registered attendees from a 150 expected turnout on Saturday November 20. City Mayor Doug Mc Bride and MLA Ron McBryde attended as diverse locals including businessmen teachers farmers housewives and children registered. The event aimed to give citizens a voice on town issues and possible actions to address concerns.

Trailer Court lots go on sale in The Pas subdivision

The first 36 lots in a new trailer subdivision along Centennial Drive in The Pas are selling for 8700 dollars each. The council noted fully serviced lots include landscaping and hookups with space for 52 more lots being prepared for future expansion.
