Manitoba Reports One of Quietest Forest Fire Years

Manitoba recorded 232 fires across woodlands this year, burning 28 351 acres. The figure compares with 638 in 1967 and 707 in 1961, and is near the 235 fires of 1966. About 65 percent of fires were human caused, and the average size was 123 acres. The largest blaze struck Peterson Creek near Lac du Bonnet, about 9 000 acres. April and May saw 46 and 85 fires, the two worst months. Loss of marketable timber was minimal. Precipitation and thunderstorms helped suppress fires. Detection and suppression cost about $600 000, offset by water bombers and helicopters keeping fires small.
