Cumberland House and Early Fort Cumberland Vision
The account describes Cumberland House on Pine Island Lake as a major Hudson's Bay Company depot with rich gardens and a sun dial from England. It notes the Big Stone River and Tearing River as Saskatchewan connections, and details Crooked River routes, soils, and subsistence crops. The party departs Cumberland in a birch bark canoe on August 16, 1858, with guides and pemican concerns for the Red River journey.
