Manitoba Seeks 10 Boost for Nonpensioner Groups
Welfare Minister John Carroll said Manitoba asked Ottawa to extend the federal Old Age Security increase to Old Age Assistance, Blind Persons Allowances, and Disabled Persons Allowances. The province would cover 50 percent of the added pensions, maintaining its need based social allowances with medicare benefits and ongoing reviews. Municipal top ups are possible, and the Social Allowances Act has operated since 1960 with no municipal complaints.
