The Legion plans a November 11 service starting with a 10:30 parade from the Legion Hall and an 10:45 ceremony at the Lido Theatre. Poppies sold November 7 evening and November 8, funds aid needy veterans. services to be held in all schools.
Sam Waller leads groundbreaking for the Little Northern Museum basement on a $23 000 Centennial Project sponsored by The Pas Rotary Club. Fundraising from the Markeh walk totals 5500 with donors including Orest Pidskalyny Alfred McDonald and Albert Melnick. Bruce Dunlop reaches 926 and Pas Herald contributes 184 as Harold Kowalchuk expects another 1000 from remaining walkers. The Pas Overturn Concert Association presents its first show Concert 76 on November 23 featuring four American artists including John Miles Marietta Jones Arthur Webb and Edith Clifton. Miles, a tenor, covers TV radio opera oratorio and concert work nationwide and has won the New York Singing Teachers' Association Young Artist Award. Ghosts and space men attended the Elk's Lodge Halloween Party for youngsters showing up for movies treats and prizes. Prizes by age group were awarded with Kelly Bates Bonnie Needham Arla Parker and Marylyn Nabess among early girls winners.
An 86 year old The Pas Reserve resident Thomas Settee was found dead in a jail cell last week after a liquor offence arrest in the early hours of November 1. RCMP said death likely natural causes but a postmortem will be conducted.
Justice J Hunt of Winnipeg reserved judgement on a case in The Pas between the Town of The Pas Jack Kennedy and Cal Gibson over the sale of land for a meat packing plant. The plant is under construction on the town’s south side and Kennedy and Gibson opposed the sale citing potential odor. The matter will be decided after further consideration.
Two men escaped from the local Correctional Institute last week and were on the run for about three hours before RCMP captured them. James Harold Desroche 18 of Quebec and Helmut Gustav Schmidt 22 of Flin Flon fled about 7 30 p m October 30.
The new 1.659 million dollar Provincial Highway 106 bridge over the Saskatchewan River at The Pas will officially open November 16 though traffic is allowed now. Minister Joseph Borowski announced the bridge will be named Bignell Bridge to honor Cornelius Bignell of The Pas Indian Reserve. Born 1897, he was a long time band councillor and chief, later serving on national and regional Indian councils and aiding Manitoba Indian Brotherhood.
