Miss Barbour Honored By Students At The Pas Collegiate

Former students and friends from Ottawa to Vancouver and Hay River gathered at The Pas Collegiate Auditorium to honor Miss Margaret Barbour for 59 years of teaching. Jack Walker presented gifts including a stereo Hi Fi and a portable TV. Jack Kennedy announced the school will be renamed Margaret Barbour Collegiate effective September 1.

Truckers Confront Bridge Weight Limits North of The Pas

Truckers clash with authorities over a 54 000 pound weight cap on Highway 10 bridge north of The Pas as seasonal restrictions tighten. Cecil Gardewine of Gardewine Transfer reports the limit applies year round to this bridge while four axle loads rise to 60 000 pounds during restrictions and 72 060 pounds otherwise.

Knights of Columbus Cancel Bicycle Safety Clinics

The Knights of Columbus suspend their bicycle safety lane clinics after three Saturdays with very low turnout. The group proposed a town by law mandating clinic attendance for bicycle licenses, plus ongoing safety checks, but the by law was never passed.

Pas Chamber Builds Log Cabin Tourist Bureau

The Pas Chamber of Commerce crews began erecting a log cabin tourist bureau beside the King Trapper Sign in the town’s south end on Saturday. Bill Chapman and Charlie Smith helped dig the cement foundation while Joe Lundy of Vickery's Lodge peeled logs for the structure. Public Works had leveled the area and prepared a roadway off the 10 Highway, with future landscaping and a rock garden planned by the horticultural society.

Annual Meet Music Festival Planned for May 25

The Pas Music and Drama Festival announces its annual meeting at 8 pm in the new Kel sey School. Convenors should bring reports and the executive seeks wider community involvement from parents and others interested in music drama and speech.

100 Delegates to CUPE Convention Held in The Pas

The Pas is chosen as the site for the 1964 Manitoba Division CUPE annual convention. Local 745 president Ray Harmatiuk said about 100 delegates will attend, with the event continuing on page 8.

Tenders Open for The Pas Airport Renovation Work

Tenders have been called this week for repairs and rebuilding at The Pas Airport with bids due June 9. Work includes runway 12 30 taxiways aircraft parking apron paving access road and lighting. In March a federal allocation of 600000 was announced for airport repairs. The Pas is served by Trans Air but poor runway conditions limit service. the community relies on PC-3 air service.

Wilf Cudmore Back at Helm Trappers Festival

Wilf Cudmore was elected chairman of the Trappers' Festival at a May 12 meeting of the Board of Directors. He faced no opposition. Directors were elected two weeks earlier at the association's annual meeting, which also required an executive committee of ten within two weeks. Vice chairman is Wilf Crossing? The secretary is Mrs. Stan Reid and treasurer Lucille Fouilliard. Executive members include Blake McKay, Bob Seidel, Bart Kobar, Orville Gareau, Adam Sus and Doug Gourlay. Fifty four directors were nominated at the annual meeting.

Reverend Spence Receives Saskatchewan Honorary Degree

Archdeacon AHAB Spence born raised and educated on The Pas Reserve was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws at the University of Saskatchewan last week. He serves as principal of the Indian School at Sioux Lookout.
