A ceremony honored the CNR foreman with a plaque featuring a steam locomotive and a purse. His wife Leonie received a bouquet as he accepted the award from B and B master Wal.
The Pas Volunteer Fire Department was summoned Saturday evening to a vacant building behind the new Wescana Inn on Fischer Avenue and again Sunday afternoon for a grass fire. Firefighters faced access issues at the rear next to CNR tracks as flames endangered a neighboring house. The vacant former F.M.B. Agency building, moved to its current site to make way for the hotel, belonged to B.B.S. three doctors.
Takashima announces candidacy as an independent for The Pas Constituency and pledges to serve residents regardless of party lines. He says his sole obligation is to voters in The Pas and seeks harmony through freedom of choice and opportunity. He notes no allegiance to parties or big business.
Clean-up weeks May 22 to June 1 feature a new twist as a panel of judges will select the tidiest lane in town. Winners will have a sign placed at each end of the lane to mark the honor until next year’s campaign.
A May 10 meeting at The Pas Friendship Centre reviewed summer minor baseball and softball plans. Registrations showed 107 boys for hardball, 66 girls for softball, and 31 boys for softball, with a proposed new 8 to 9 year old division to be decided after further registration input.
Miss Beverly Bagshaw, 19, of The Pas, will represent The Pas and the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival at the Flin Flon Trout Festival in early July. She works as a Royal Bank teller and backs The Pas for Northern event recognition. The Carson River Valley crops face another loss as floodwaters linger, delaying seeding into June despite farmers urging government aid.
J. E. Drew, formerly trainmaster for Canadian National at Saskatoon, has been moved to the same post here. He replaces H. K. Shaffield, who has been transferred to Sioux Lookout.
The Herald announces a modified advertising schedule due to the May 21 holiday. Advertisers should submit copy by Friday afternoon or face a 11 A.M. Tuesday May 22 deadline for display and classified ads. News releases must arrive in The Herald office by 4 P.M. Friday.
The Andersons of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Anderson add a baby buffalo bringing the herd to four and plan two more calves next year. They also acquire a Japanese deer Moa nals from India and Chuckers partridges, spending 75.90 on Moanals from Winnipeg Zoo. More pen and pasture space is added to accommodate the collections.
