Lions Collect For Red Shield This Evening

The Pas Lions will canvass residents tonight around 6 30 to support the Salvation Army Red Shield Drive. Receipts will be provided and the effort funds homes for unmarried mothers hospitals and hostels across the community.

Grass and bush fires keep volunteer fire department busy

The volunteer fire department faced a busy week with multiple grass and bush fires culminating in a deliberate burn of the Halcrow Lake area to reduce costs and prevent future incidents. Spectators watched as officials weighed risks and costs before the blaze. Later a reported fire call at the Occidental Cafe was found to be a police matter misinterpreted as a fire.

New Dauphin The Pas Flin Flon bus service approved

Manitoba Motor Transit wins approval for a second Dauphin The Pas Flin Flon route. The service departs Flin Flon at 5 p m The Pas at 7 p m and arrives in Dauphin at 12 10 a m with a Greyhound connection to Winnipeg. Return trips depart Dauphin at 12 45 a m and reach Flin Flon at 7 45 a m.

Pipeline Project Planned from Regina to The Pas

Provo Gas announces an application to build a 320 mile six inch petroleum products pipeline from Regina to The Pas with terminals at Yorkton and Benito and storage at Melville. The line will carry jet fuel gasoline propane butane diesel and other fuels at 17 000 barrels a day, reducing transport costs for northern Manitoba buyers.

Leave Monday Closing Alone Says Speaker

A Manitoba survey shows local merchants in The Pas favor keeping all day Monday closing with four to one support. Bud Wocks of the Retail Merchants Association of Manitoba spoke at the Chamber of Commerce dinner, noting The Pas led in Monday closing and that 49 towns followed. He defended the by law, warned against longer hours, and said no public demand exists to repeal the policy.

Student Typists Excel In Class At Local High School

Karen Johnson typed 62 words per minute in ten minutes in Mrs. Frank Parker Jr. s commercial typing class at The Pas Collegiate. Haven Vatzel followed one wpm behind. Both are eleventh graders in a class of 18 with 68 high school typing students overall.

Isabel Coad Wins Trip To Ottawa

Isabel Coad will represent The Pas Collegiate at the annual Adventure to Citizenship program in Ottawa sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Canada. She will leave The Pas on May 10 and be in Ottawa by May 13 as students from each province attend a national event. Around 200 students typically participate.

Isabel tops grades at The Pas Collegiate year after year

Isabel Coach of The Pas has completed all schooling there and consistently earned top marks. She led grade ten last year and remains first in grade eleven. Active in school affairs she is Assistant Editor of the Aurora yearbook. She plans to attend the University of Manitoba after grade twelve. In Ottawa she will tour the Royal Mint Parliament Buildings Public Archives and Hull Quebec by bus and receives citizenship papers from the Prime Minister. Her sister Mrs Frank Parker Jr a commercial teacher at the Collegiate also won this trip as a grade eleven student.

Mayor Juba Plans Fishing Holiday and Trout Derby

Mayor Stephen Juba will visit The Pas area for a mid June fishing trip then attend the Flin Flon Trout Festival from June 29 to July 1. He aims to win the Derby prize by weight on Clearwater Lake, using a trailer and boat during the festival.
