Fire Chief Neil Puckett reports a third floor mattress fire in the ladies dorm at Keewatin Community College around 1:00 a.m. on March 13. Smoke alerted occupants, the fire was put out, and he seeks full details on why no alarm sounded.
The Norman Regional Development Corporation board passed a resolution asking Premier Sterling Lyon to appoint a commission to review agricultural production in the Pasquia settlement and west of The Pas. The plan calls for a joint study with Consol district, The Pas Farmers Association, Ducks Unlimited and The Pas Indian Band to frame long term policy and development proposals.
D.F. Doig of Winnipeg was appointed CN trainmaster at The Pas succeeding J.A. Sebesta who became assistant superintendent at Melville. Doig oversees the Flin Flon Chisel Lake Wekusko Thicket Portage Thompson and Herchmer subdivisions and CN terminals at Thompson Gillam and Churchill. A Northern Manitoba development push accompanied the meeting. Reeve John Bodnar urged a Premier appointed commission.
A Kelsey School Division bus driver was instantly dismissed after a 10 30 AM incident in Thompson. About 30 elementary students and four teachers were en route to a science fair when concerns about drinking were raised by two The Pas men who alerted the students and staff. Police say a court appearance is planned for April 5 in Thompson and the dismissal was approved by the division superintendent and the board in a closed session.
Sam Waller died after being found collapsed in his washroom. Fire Chief Neil Puckett and family found him. he died peacefully in hospital. He founded a museum in The Pas and donated land and contents in 1970. His will leaves money to local Lions and Rotary clubs and much to his three Fingland sisters.
Payton Wilson, former base manager, says the provincial air service suffered a 70 percent cut leaving one plane, one pilot, and one engineer in The Pas. He notes most patient transport calls are not emergencies and predicts future flights will be chartered from Winnipeg. Wilson plans to run Wilson's Upholstery full time, listing $160 rocker reups and $700 Chesterfield costs, while offering trade lessons if interest grows.
J Frank Johnston of Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation and Doug McBride announced a joint policy limit. No more than 12 of the 60 total Bell Avenue units will be kept for subsidized rental to low income families to preserve dispersed housing across neighborhoods. Ten townhouses are currently rented under the program.
The Wescana Inn, put into receivership over a year ago, will be taken over by a Cheema Systems syndicate led by Evans Premachuk with formal opening planned for June. Al McKellar returns as manager after resigning from Athapap Builders. Community Hotels of Manitoba to continue management until the changeover.
