Mineral Rights Hold Up National Park in Manitoba
Sterling Lyon told the Manitoba Legislature that two sites are under study for a second National Park in Manitoba. One site lies east of Lake Winnipeg, the other in the Cranberry Portage area. Cranberry Portage is being pushed by Flin Flon interests seeking northern community support. Lyon said mining laws near parks hinder Ottawa negotiations. Both sites are mineral rich. Ice Worm Song Recordings and Northern Ballads Mentioned
The piece notes Wilf Carter as the only known recorder of the Ice Worm Song, a scarce Bluebird 78 RPM from the Trappers' Festival. Copies are rare and valued. Sam Waller seeks one for his Little Northern Museum and a BC resident also requests a copy. A revival idea suggests a 45 RPM single with Centennial Hymn, but 2000 copies would be needed at a price about 78 cents to a dollar. It also mentions a New York long play titled Northern Ballads referencing the festival and local Ren activities (continues on page 10).
