Canada moves toward metric standards with no plan for mandatory general use. Adoption proceeds via voluntary conversion as Imperial and metric systems in the broader world diverge, with most of humanity adopting metric or converting.
A 1970 White Paper commits Canada to switching from inches and pounds to the metric system. A three phase plan runs 1971 75 with full implementation by 1980. Industry sees long term cost savings but short term expenses hit small firms and some consumers. Hospitals signs and signage move to Celsius and metric data by 1977 1978 1979.
Dale Mulhale recalls a snowbound transit from the barren eastern Turkish plains into Iran. He notes Mt. Ararat, Tehran's vast bazaar, the high snowbound road pass, turquoise mines near Meshed, and Persian rug making. He reports on gas prices, customs, and Shah era scenes with brisk traveler observations.
