Indian Affairs weighing 4.2 million write off for Otineka Mall
The Department of Indian Affairs plans to seek a 4.2 million write off from the Treasury Board as part of a broader 50 million write down of development costs. Dec Smith, MP for Churchill, says the recommendation will be accepted. Chief Charlie Constant of The Pas Indian Band urges relief of at least 4 million to keep the Otineka Mall open with full occupancy. The Mall faces an 8.27 million debt and seeks a 4 million write down to allow continued operation, with 92 percent retail space leased and 77 percent basement and 85 percent office space leased.

Inquest into Nicola Godfrey's March 4 1977 drowning in Valley View Trailer Court lagoon heard Judge W R Martin urge mandatory fencing and regular inspections around sewage lagoons. The hearing linked local owner Paul Marshall's property to the lagoon and described dilapidated fencing and child access. The Pas politics were also noted with Ron McBryde seeking NDP nomination ahead of an expected fall election.
