Digging Deep for Nickel at Thompson Manitoba Pipe No 2
In 1967 Jerry Marshall, 27, planned the layout for the Pipe No 2 open pit near Thompson. Overburden 15 million cubic yards, up to 150 feet, must be removed. muskeg and ice lie above the ore. A dredge on 95 flat cars pumps sludge at 35 000 gallons per minute to uncover the nickel faster.
