Manitoba forests endure 236 fires this season with July blaze activity centered near Thompson and Wabowden. The Department of Mines and Natural Resources reports 96 fires from July 1 to 25, fought by 15 men aided by two Canso bombers and three helicopters. Firefighting uses water bombers followed by airlifted crews to remote sites.
The Otter planes now carry internal tanks able to hold about 200 gallons of water. The tanks are filled by a probe lowered into the water as the aircraft skims the surface. They prove effective on small fires and as mop up after larger water bombers move on to other jobs.
Manitoba Minister Leonard Evans announced dates and bag limits for migratory birds. Ducks now allow seven per day with four mallards and eight in possession. total bag doubles from last year. No canvasbacks or redheads this season, though one mistake bird is permitted to protect breeding stock. Pintails and blue winged teal are abundant.
The province sets goose limits at five daily and 10 possession with seasonal dates for ducks rails coots and Wilsons snipe varying by latitude. Canvasback grounds delayed opening to protect the bird. No sandhill crane season except in the Manitoba sandhill crane area September 1 to 13. Morning hunting only in some areas from September 29 to October 12. Resident game bird licence $2.25 plus a $2 migratory bird permit.
