Denyse Morrish directs a two hour all local stage show at the Lido Theatre for the Trappers Festival in its sixth year. The production features more than 60 cast and crew with numbers from South Pacific Oklahoma and Oklahoma plus dance and chorus performances.
Manitoba spends more on education than any other activity, says Education Minister Stewart McLean at The Pas meeting. In the last budget of 105 million, one third funded educational services, a rise from 14 million in 1958. Since 1959 Ninety six new high and elementary schools are under construction, with local and provincial treasuries contributing about 43 million and provincial share averaging 60 percent for schools and buses.
The Pas Chamber of Commerce invites new members offering individual membership for the year at a fee of $2. Enquiries can be directed to President Bart Kobar, Secretary Jack Graham, or to the membership committee Lee Carroll and Russ Tauze.
Manitoba education minister Stewart McLean admitted at The Pas last Thursday that The Pas holds an important role in considering a northern vocational training school. He noted The Pas is on the list of centers under study for future institute of technology extensions in the province.
The Pas to establish its first school boy safety patrol with Kinsmen Club sponsorship. The School Board approved January 15 to let the program start, insurance details pending but expected to be resolved. Patrols will control student flow at busy intersections during class times with white belt recognition and RCMP assistance.
Planning Committee in The Pas has circulated a report to local groups urging participation in a Sunday meeting to finalize plans for the town’s 50th anniversary celebration. The tentative dates August 24 26 are proposed for the event with a centerpiece program outlined for adoption.
The Pas Branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society calls its annual meeting for tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the Community Building council chambers. W. A. LeBlanc will discuss mouth to mouth resuscitation. The meeting will include local officer nominations from a waiting list and potential from the floor.
The President of The Pas Huskie Hockey Club announces Roland Goldstrand will coach the Huskies for the remaining season. Goldstrand, a long time local star with Junior and Senior A experience in Canada and overseas, succeeds Jack Ashley Sr who cannot commit to all games and practices.
The Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association intermediate playdowns begin with The Pas facing Flin Flon in a best of five series on Thursday. Game two will be in Flin Flon next Tuesday, with a third game back in The Pas on Thursday. If needed a fourth game goes north and a fifth would be in The Pas. The winner advances to the Manitoba AA semi finals against Brandon Clover Leafs or Louris Elks, then the victor faces Winnipeg Metro League for the Provincial Championship.
Thirty head arrive at The Pas from Moose Lake marking the start of this year’s round-up led by Tom Lamb and his ranch hands. An additional 63 head coming this morning brings total cattle to The Pas as 220 head are expected to be shipped to Winnipeg via Swan River The Pas Transfer. Don Lamb Jock McAfee and Connie Lamb head the operation as a tractor train moves cattle from Moose Lake to The Pas for transfer to Winnipeg, a journey of at least twelve hours.
In bitterly cold weather the Young Canada night in the Arena last Saturday featured a lively program of minor hockey. Mayor Harry Trager opened with an address on hockey for physical and character building. The Tom Thumb game saw the Reds defeat the Purples 4-1 with 8-year-old star Donald Gemjmil scoring two goals and earning top honors. Jerry Plante and Louis Leguillioux added Red goals while Ted Cheetham scored for the Reds' opponents.
The Department of Industry and Commerce is backing a pulp mill project in northern Manitoba. Hon. Jack Carroll told the local Progressive Conservative association that The Pas is among possible sites and a decision may come soon. He cited high freight rates as a major obstacle to the mill’s development.
Mr. Sam Goodman of the New Democratic Party outlined the party platform at a Thursday night public meeting chaired by Mr. Ross Framingham. He said no election promises would be made except that Canadians deserve a government serving people and nation rather than private enterprise, citing Trans-Canada Airlines as an example of a public utility with trans continental reach.
Moffat, chairman of the Kinsmen Senior Citizens Housing Project, says two properties are under consideration for a 12 unit complex in The Pas. Each unit would rent for about 50 to 60 dollars monthly including heat, light, and water with central washing facilities. Units would have a living room bedroom and kitchenette with electric stove and fridge.
