Mines and Natural Resources Minister Harry J Enus announced 12 exploration permits covering about 1.8 million acres have been issued since late October. The permits, allowing exploration for minerals other than oil and gas, include six areas near the York Factory region and Grand Rapids, with holders such as Consolidated East Crest Oil Co Ltd Denison Mines Goldray Mines Roman Corp Aquitaine Company of Canada and Southwest Potash Corporation. Dr D R Derry holds two reservations about 75 miles north of Grand Rapids in a previously opened Crown area.
The holder must spend at least 25 cents per acre in 18 months, about 447000 dollars, with a possible 12 month extension requiring 50 cents per acre. Mr Enns notes rising interest in mineral potential in overlooked areas, aided by the Manitoba Canada aeromagnetic survey guiding reconnaissance exploration.
An inquest was ordered into the death of Lucille Maria Theresa Bighetty a five year old from the Pukatawagon Indian Reserve found frozen near a railway track at Dryborough about 25 miles south of Lynn Lake. It is believed she wandered from a train and was not missed until the train had passed. Search parties were organized but too late.
