The Human Spirit in the New Year
A veteran teacher reflects on the elusive human spirit and its presence in students and elders. He argues spirit drives virtue and folly, offers concrete examples of resilience and defiance, and outlines how the essay assignment should probe spirit under stress without sentimentality. The piece challenges readers to see spirit in childish stubbornness, old age solitude, and acts of quiet defiance.
