The Pas Herald notes the 1916 first dog race at The Pas with winner Jack Camp Bell. The pictured reproduction is part of a series presented to The Pas Chamber of Commerce by C P Wood of Houston Texas. Wood’s collection includes early street scenes of The Pas and 1916 dog race images.
A capacity crowd at the Collegiate Auditorium watched the 27th Annual Drama Festival at The Pas. Principal N. S. Toms chaired the finals presentation where eight trophies and a Rose Bowl were awarded after Mrs. H. Danielson spoke in praise of the festival.
Diane Frechette and Bob Munroe led the Arts and Drama Festival at the Grand Concert with the top marks. Bob Munroe was declared the winner and received the Rose Bowl from Sandra McDonald, the prior year's awardee.
Neil Macphee received a letter from C P Wood of Houston Texas proposing a display of historic The Pas photographs at this year’s Trappers Festival. Wood, one of three engineers who studied the Tom Creighton strike at Flin Flon in 1915-16, sent two display folders. pictures were shown last evening at the Musher’s Banquet with Wood’s notes, with more reproduced this week in The Pas Herald.
A general meeting will be held Sunday February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Community Building Council Chambers to adopt the planning committee report for The Past 50th Anniversary. The August 24 25 26 dates are set with many organizations already committing to sponsor events.
The Pas Chamber of Commerce arranged a sellout Mushers Banquet at the Legion Hall with several veteran mushers in attendance. 82 year old Sam Pranteau received special recognition from guest speaker Tom Lamb who played a goose call recording twice for the celebrated mail runner famed for a $500 dog team trip between The Pas and Grand Rapids.
The Ukrainian Catholic Church in The Pas hosts a Holopchi Dinner this Sunday February 25 starting at 12 00 noon in the Parish Hall. A plate of Holopchi is one dollar with free second helpings. Proceeds go to the new Parish Hall building fund.
The DM Mixed Chorus presents A Broadway Rendezvous at the Lido Theatre tonight and tomorrow with a 8pm curtain and a 4pm matinee today. Art Johnson depicts a farmer from Oklahoma while J Denyse Morrish coordinates production assisted by Negri Leicester and Norma Booth. Tickets available at Festival Headquarters Herald Block Macdonalds Northland Drugs.
Sixteen teams started the World Championship Dog Derby at 10 am from the Exhibition Grounds as the 3 day 150 mile race begins for a $1000 prize and Labatt Trophy. Real Qouelette and Clemmy Chartrand lead nine-dog teams, with Real sponsored by Marie and Laird, whose father returned from Winnipeg to help. Philip Umperville brings the smallest entry of five dogs from Moose Lake. Race concludes at the grounds around two thirty.
An item at the Trappers Festival features Paul Fee displaying his coin collection in the Toronto Dominion Bank lobby. The exhibit includes Hudson Bay tokens and other historical currency from the era of the finder.
Sacred Heart Our Lady of The Sacred Heart Church begins a mission from February 25 through March 11 led by Rev. D K Edward C S R. Ladies run February 25 to March 4 while Men start March 4 and end March 11. Four Masses mark opening at 7, 9 and 11 a m and 5 p m with daily Masses at 7 30 a m and an evening sermon at 7.
The Trappers Festival crowns its queen Thursday at 1 30 PM atop the CNR platform after a parade downtown at 12 30. Eight communities enter queen candidates this year, with a jet display by the RCAF following the parade. Festival chairman Wilf Cudmore to call gathering to order and Stella Yaworski to speak.
The Pat Huskies advance against Brandon in a Manitoba Intermediate AA playoff series opener set for Saturday in Dauphin. CKDM will air the second and third periods around 8 30 p m, with sponsorship from Profit's Carnegie and local distributor Jack Kennedy.
