Freight rate dispute stirs Canadian rail debate
ManFor comments on CN freight increases announced before Christmas that sparked controversy as users claim railways charge too much. Railways say profits require higher rates and seek subsidies. By Dec 31 the Canadian Transport Commission limited increases to half of the request for sixty days while talks with western provinces proceed. Northern residents bear the brunt as rate hikes push goods out of reach. Co op Fisheries ships about 200 400 pounds of fish monthly in the North. Bodnar notes rates up about 21 percent since January 1 despite a 19 15 percent rise.
