The Manitoba Legislature opened with Peter Fox as speaker for the new session. The Lieutenant Governor read the Speech from the Throne, praising strong economic performance and forecast continued development, amid a partisan nominating scene and a last minute singing substitution.
The speech outlines store-front legal aid expansion, enforcement officers for separated wives, a possible Northern Manitoba land titles district, a jail in The Pas, and dental care for children. It pledges road building, a Northern road program, higher old age pensions, improved Crop Insurance, workmen’s compensation increases, portable private pensions study, more camping and tourist amenities, and housing grants up to 300 dollars a year with northern subsidies. It also mentions mineral development, general insurance reforms, and potential treasury branches.
