Firemen Gather For Ninth Annual Pas Volunteer Social Dance

The Pas Volunteer Fire Brigade hosts its ninth annual social and dance at the Masonic hall with fire chief Tom Earley receiving a ceremonial hydrant prize from Chairman Gary Peterson. President Jim Hemauer salutes the wives, notes the danger of firefighting, and praises Mayor Jack Kennedy for support as the crowd honors long service veterans Bert Hayes and Jack Walker.

Festival Button Design Approved

The 25th Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival approved its button design at a recent meeting. The cross snowshoes motif bears "25th Anniversary" with the 1947 founding noted. Sculptor Real Berard drew the design and builds the annual snow replica and ice palace centerpiece near the river. Ed Wong of Parks Branch mentions a slide will be added to the ice palace for visiting children.

Ski-Doo Stolen From Gateway Hotel Lot

A 1971 Ski-Doo was stolen from the back of a 1/2 ton truck parked behind the Gateway Hotel in The Pas and district moose hunting trip. Jim Spence and Edward Spence reported the vehicle missing after 11:30 Tuesday night, with a $200 reward offered for information to RCMP Town Detachment.

Santa to visit The Pas for free kids’ show

Art Show At KCC Starts Man

The Winnipeg Art Gallery Extension Services presents "Cezanne and Monet" as part of an eight show series for local students. Twelve reproductions of past works will be displayed at Keewatin Community College from December 20 to January 16, offering year round art viewing away from the mainstream.

Water wells drilled for fire protection in town

Town engineer Steve Samu reports four test holes were drilled to assess underground water supplies for fire protection. Two holes were dry at Seventh Street near Keewatin Community College and Gordon Avenue and 13th Street, while two showed potential water at Lagoon Road and 14th Street. If pumping tests confirm adequate supply, the wells will be capped until spring when pump houses will be built to house emergency gasoline motors.

Water Treatment Plant Nears Completion

Construction of a new 3/4 million dollar water treatment plant is nearing completion. Financed by the Federal Government’s Department of Regional Economic Expansion, the project is supervised by Ander eRe McLellan and Associates td and built by W W Construction Ltd of Winnipeg. The Pas’s original plant, built circa 1913, drew water from the North Saskatchewan River to the Deep Well.

Reconciliation Measure Enables 90-Day Cohabitation Return

Attorney-General Al Mackling announced a new amendment to the Wives and Children's Maintenance Act allowing legally separated couples to resume living together for up to 90 days without invalidating the separation. The measure, coming into force December 27, aims to facilitate reconciliation, noting that current law lets a husband seek discharge of a separation order if the wife cohabits again after a court order.

Rumored Shift Cut At River Sawmills

A River Sawmills spokesman says about 50 workers may shift to four hours from eight as a smaller unit struggles to feed the planer in an 11 acre facility. The mill, operating since 1968, produced 60 000 feet daily while the planer handles 300 000. The startup of a second line is near but not ready. The cutback is described as temporary and length unclear.
