At the regular Town Council session lasting into the early morning, Mayor Trager faced the council vote on the administrator appointment and cast a decisive veto amid the adjournment at 2 15 a.m. The contentious vote highlighted a split on leadership and governance.
A 15 year old local youth was detained by RCM Police after a Saturday morning incident at the Cambrian Hotel and Post Office. The council split on two bids including hiring a town administrator and a full time dog catcher with the mayor casting the tie breaking vote due to a vacant sixth seat.
Councillor Koch blasted council colleagues calling them impotent and demanded the mayor and two councillors resign to allow modern ideas to govern. He presented 15 prepared resolutions and warned of public dissatisfaction with council policy and administration during the verbal report period.
Doug McBride publisher of The Pas Herald swept the by election held in The Pas on Monday November 30. He secured 498 votes with continuing coverage noted.
Brian Salamondra of Keewatin Community College The Pas Manitoba receives a Canada Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Winnipeg Branch scholarship. He is presented a $100 scholarship check by Andy Mahalek head of Mineral Science Technology at KCC. Salamondra from Creighton Saskatchewan is Hapnot High School graduate Flin Flon. Saturday morning blaze on Fischer Avenue leveled Carter's Sporting Goods and Stationery with losses estimated up to 125000. Deter's Confectionery nearby suffered smoke and water damage. Clarence Deter fears his stock is ruined. Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter, and Anna Fisher escaped, aided by the labrador who woke Carter and directed Mrs. Fisher to safety. Carter retrieved her fur coat.
Town Council received Municipal Board decision on objections to an amendment that would let Porky Packers operate. The report suggests sending the issue to Town Planning for provincial guidance on a broader industrial zoning scheme for The Pas. Rezoning would cover the area around the south end of Gordon Ave.
The council passed a resolution at a regular meeting to hire Adam Sus of Underwood McLellan as temporary full time Town Engineer. The position has been vacant since October with a $500 per month salary. The hiring was recommended by Underwood McLellan to assist budget prep and orient new staff, with attendance by a senior firm member at monthly committee meetings.
Timberland Trailer Court, in a letter to Town Council at their regular meeting last Wednesday, offered to pay the Town of The Pas an amount equivalent to 50 mills.
The town’s 107 percent assessment on land and buildings yields taxes of 43 230.00. The I R Corporation argues it has not received full services and has agreed to pay 10.00 per trailer, rising to 15.00 after a municipal act amendment, for fire police and education costs totaling 2 162.00 yearly. The corporation will pay this amount to the town while continuing to provide other services. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 11)
