Rodeo Highlights fill the day with crowd and parade energy

A nearly perfect day drew about eighteen hundred spectators to the rodeo with standout parade by Kelsey Band and the Pas Trappers Festival Float taking top honours. Dee Smith opened events while chuckwagons drew few hitches and a seven second ride by Kevin Colquhoun sparked commentary. Grandstand activity included bumps and scrapes as crowds lined Larose and Third and traffic snarls were resolved.

July Rainfall Exceeds Norm but Stays Below Historic July

The July rainfall was heavy yet under the July record of 146 mm set in 1966. It rained on 11 days, total monthly rainfall was 98.9 mm, and the heaviest 29 mm fell on July 27. Temperatures averaged 23.6 C, near seasonal norms, with 37 C the July high (July 19, 1941) and 6 C the July low (July 12, 1926).

In Provincial Court Judge W R Martin finds Alvin Martin guilty on two counts of possession of stolen property and receives two 90 day sentences. Rene Ballantyne is found guilty on one count and cleared on another for insufficient evidence. Alvin Martin’s second 90 day term runs concurrently.

North Manitoba bears subject to Wildlife Act limits says official

Gordon Johnson chief conservation officer for The Pas Area warns Manitoba residents north of the 53rd parallel that bears may only be shot in self defense or during the hunting season. An ad sponsored by the Manitoba Beekeepers Association suggested bears could be killed on sight, which Johnson says is false. Prosecutions and fines up to 300 dollars apply. Coyotes are noted as the largerNorth concern and trapping is often used.

Opasquia Indian Days Opens With Pow Wow Activities

Opasquia Indian Days begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Otineka Mall with a free daily Pow Wow featuring Chicken Grass and Hoop dances. The event runs through Saturday night with continued activities including a Princess Pageant, Fiddle Competition prize and canoe racing events leading to a final leg on Saturday August 21.
