Paving strike in The Pas stalls Borger project talks falter
Union and management spokesmen report no conciliation talks between Borger Industries Ltd and Teamsters Operating Engineers and Labour unions in The Pas. Fifteen to seventeen hundred workers affected by a stoppage as 17 Winnipeg jobs shut down and 300 to 350 The Pas men idle. Des Lauriers says one year contract with higher wages and holiday pay sought, similar to BA Construction. The 10th Opasquia Indian Days canoe race will admit only competitors from the four Western provinces to boost local participation. Organizer Irvin Constant notes dwindling entries and prize money favoring Americans. The race shortens to three daily 25 mile laps totaling 75 miles with a 5000 dollar purse and top prizes of 1200, 1000, and 800. The event opens with a 10 am Thursday start on the Saskatchewan River near the Indian offices, featuring sprint races and the Indian Princess Pageant with Sandra Delaronde as last year’s Manitoba Metis winner.

Grant family reunion marks 71 members in The Pas
Seventy one members of Mr and Mrs Ed Grants family gathered in The Pas to honor the couple. The celebration drew relatives from western provinces Ontario and the U S with Mrs Ethel Wink from Portland Oregon. The event celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Grants in The Pas and previews the 65th wedding anniversary and Mrs Grants 90th birthday. Arvid Sweede Grant led 26 representatives. A dinner, dance, worship service and social events followed including golf and mixed games at local clubs.
