Elks Donate 10000 Toward The Pas Swimming Pool

The Pas BPO Elks Lodge adds 10000 to the indoor pool project at Margaret Barbour Collegiate. Total pledges reach 111000 toward a 232000 cost spearheaded by the Kelsey Recreation Commission. Jim Goodridge, a commission member, announced the gift after a lodge meeting with visiting district Grand Exalted Ruler. A Centennial Concert by the Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Choir of Winnipeg raises net proceeds for the pool Saturday.

Vandals Damage Two Schools On The Weekend

RCMP investigate a break in at Opasquia School with several hundred dollars in damage. Entry believed gained by breaking a door glass early Saturday morning. Story continues on page 11.

Massive pulp digestors pass CN Railway at Winnipeg

Two giant pulp digestors built in Lauzon Quebec destined for Churchill Forest Industries mill at The Pas moved through CN Symington Yard Winnipeg last week. Each 94 ton unit measures 60 feet long and 15 feet in diameter. Specially designed CN flat cars carried these exceptionally heavy loads.

Trappers' Festival may end as surrender motion discussed

Last Thursday the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival Inc met with eighteen attendees to discuss the mass decline in interest. A motion to surrender the associations letters patent was tabled and the meeting adjourned for two weeks to solicit public backing for the festival.

Seven youths charged in Clearwater Lake break ins

The Rural RCMP arrested seven male youths aged 14 to 16 from Guy Hill Residential School for a series of cottage break ins at Clearwater Lake. They are linked to at least nine of twelve incidents near Mile 19 over six days, with limited damage reported. The case has been referred to the Probation Officer.

Town Council Approves New Recreation Director

At a special meeting last week the Town Council approved hiring the new recreation director after earlier disagreements with the Kelsey Recreation Commission over the $10 000 per year salary. The council ultimately consented to the appointment and salary.

Locks and Boxes at City Post Office

Post Office officials report 180 of 470 newly installed boxes rented with just under half remaining vacant. The 200 boxes left are available as demand continues.

Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Choir to perform in The Pas

The Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Choir directed by Barry Anderson performs in The Pas on Saturday May 2 at 8 p.m. Proceeds fund an indoor swimming pool for the school. Program includes The Lord's Prayer Negro spirituals folk songs Simon and Garfunkel selections and scenes from Oliver with Country Style and Hawaiian War Chant. MBCI Drama Club adds a short intermission play. Tickets via MBCI students.

Seek Authority To Prosecute J W A Union

The Manitoba Labor Relations Board was asked to investigate an alleged illegal strike at the C F I Sawmill in the forest complex site. About 50 workers were employed with many reporting ill on Friday April 17 and some later collected pay without returning to work.

Otto Herman Wins Lagoon Contract For The Pas

The town accepted Otto Herman Construction of The Pas for the first phase of a new sewage lagoon. Five tenders were received with Herman the lowest. Estimated cost is about 160700 dollars plus 10500 for an access road. lagoon to be in Grace Lake Area. Council to supervise with Underwood McLellan and Associates. Councillor Wilchowy opposed.

Contamination of Fish Spurs Manitoba Fishing Ban

Hon. Sidney Green announces a provincial response to mercury concerns in fish. The Saskatchewan River Cedar Lake and Lake Winnipeg waters will be closed to commercial fishing for the summer fall season while Manitoba waters normally open remain open for other fishing activities.
