Flin Flon Nurse Seeks Liberal Nomination

Miss Nonna Weaver a 32 year old nurse at Flin Flon announces candidacy for the federal Liberal nomination. She is daughter of former Churchill MP George Weaver who served 1949 to 1957. She says she is aware of problems in the Churchill Constituency and aims to solve them. She notes her nursing work brought her into contact with diverse communities. She urges active youth involvement.

Maureen Fjermestad Crowned Pas Figure Skating Champion

Maureen Fjermestad is named Club Champion of The Pas Figure Skating Club for the 1971 72 season. She won the title over about 80 local skaters in club competitions held March 25 and 26. Earlier she placed fourth in the Ladies Juvenile Singles at Manitoba Free Skating Competitions hosted by the local club. Congratulations Maureen.

Outdoor Writers Pick The Pas For 1972 Convention

The Outdoor Writers of Canada and U S colleagues will hold their May 19 20 21 gathering in The Pas Manitoba the first Western Canada venue. Bill Robinson Neepawa chaired the plan noting Manitoba hosts the largest Canadian group outside Ontario and promising a Trappers Festival themed event with seminars luncheons and media attendance at Keewatin Community College accommodation for about 70 to 100 members.

Council Defers Rezoning Bid To Tonight’s Meeting

The town council postponed a decision on re zoning a 16 lot block from R2 to CL light commercial. Garry Morrish plans a grocery store complex with allied outlets and will brief the town on development and parking plans tonight. Eight residents objected, with a lawyer filing on behalf of five, as adjournment was announced.

Manitoba Sets New Minimum Wages for Construction Work

Labor Minister Russ Paulley announced government approval for wage increases in heavy construction and rural building sectors in Manitoba. Effective May 1, standard 60 hour weeks raise crane operators to 3.85 per hour, up 0.35, with adjustments for other heavy machinery operators and mechanics.

Family Lose Home In Fire At Pas Reserve

On Monday March 27 a fire of undetermined origin gutted the Leonard Mickey Constant family residence at the Pas Reserve. Fire crews faced non functioning hydrants, shuttling water from Railway and First to the scene. Eight children aged six to eighteen were displaced and new quarters were found for them by the Pas Indian Band the following day.

Pas forestry complex signs salt cake contracts

Len Evans named Manitoba two year deals with Saskatchewan Minerals of Chaplin and Midwest Chemicals Ltd of Palo to supply 8000 tons yearly of salt cake for kraft pulping. The Pas complex has built a North American market for its unbleached sack and multiwall kraft paper.

Volunteers Help Move Kelsey Elementary Library

Mrs Betty Moore and four trainee aides work with librarian Kamal Khalafalla to classify books for the move to the new resource center at Kelsey Addition. Fourteen parent volunteers, many mothers of students, aid the effort with varied schedules. Principal Vaughn Wadilius notes the process is lengthy and each book needs about 15 minutes to prepare for shelves.

Police Report Quiet Weekend Ends With Normal Numbers

RCMP detachments reported a quiet weekend with no major incidents as of midnight Sunday. A break in occurred at Parkers Sole Store on Thursday night but details such as whether anything was stolen remain unclear.

Burroughs adding machine shown as bargain in Manitoba

John Chappel of the Department of Consumer, Corporate and Internal Services tests a new mechanical adding machine bought for less than a fifth of the cost of a Burroughs which the government bought in 1913 for 550 dollars. The Burroughs machine has served since 1913 and costs the taxpayer under ten dollars annually.
