Magistrate Questions Liquor Store Sales Case at The Gateway Hotel
The Government Liquor Control Commission faced sharp questions from The Courts when charged with selling liquor to minors and to a person under 21. Magistrate Neil Macphee reviewed two charges against Mardel Enterprises, operator of The Gateway Hotel, for allowing underage purchases on February 18 and March 2. Both minors testified they had bought liquor recently at The Pas and were not challenged about age. The defense cited a 1964 amendment to the Liquor Act allowing acquittal if the proprietor could not reasonably know the purchaser’s age. The proceedings featured testimony by James Highway and Norman Bernard Manger, both under 21 at the time, with details on their purchases and prior checks. The hearing adjourned with further questions to be addressed.
