A vast fire swept Ottawa engulfing the Parliament Buildings with seven fatalities reported. The western block and the entire complex were consumed, stunning Canadians from coast to coast. The structures showcased twelfth century Gothic design and impressive rock faced walls.
Witnesses saw the blaze start but could not subdue it in time. Losses include about 6 million in buildings and 1.5 million in material. The known dead include Mme Bray of Quebec, Mae Morin of St. Joseph Beauce, waiter Robert Fanning, policeman Alphonse Desjardins, and others. The fire follows Ottawa’s historic parliament complex, begun 1860, first occupied 1866, with no insurance. The government maintains it carries no insurance on its buildings.
The third blaze in Ottawa tore through the barracks of the 77th Overseas Battalion. Reports say the fire spread rapidly but rescuers hope the building can be saved.
Local businessmen re structured the Oxbow Board of Trade to revive civic energy. New president W O Fraser and vice president H C Wylie lead with S R Wallace as secretary treasurer, along with council members Tripp Tripp Ivey Gregson and Murphy. The group discussed C P R track work to coal mines, a new Oxbow station, and a garden plot at the station while residents enjoy skating at the municipal rink and anticipate another band night.
Union Bank opens at the Oxbow Branch under manager 4 E Ivey providing ready funds without formalities, signaling rapid credit access for customers.
