SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL PET SHOW.The Pet Show held at the Burra North Playground on Saturday, 27th September, attracted a large crowd of both children and adults.The weather was warm with ' a touch of summer and would have been practically perfect except for a somewhat consistent breeze throughout the afternoon. However this made very little difference to the parade of pe’ts of all descriptions, and |ttfe numerous fancy dress costumes and decorated bicycles, perams and carts.At 2.30 p.m. all children' entering the parade were assembled at the entrance gate with Mr C. Morrison in charge. Mr Haywood and.Mr T. Corry were also in attendance and in charge of placing the various entrants in their i sections.I in the absence of the Primary School Chairman. Mr L. Clode (Secretary of School Committee) with a few words of welcome, ask ed the Mayor (Mr H. J. B. Jenni-son) to open the Pet Show.Mr Jennison expressed his delight at being present and praised the Welfare Club on the interest and untiring efforts it was taking to raise funds to obtain equipment for the betterment of the scholars of the Burra School. The speaker referred to the present equipment of the school which includes a projector, a wireless and the recent asset of two very line tennis courts which dost a substantial sum of money, together with books, curtains and various other esesntials. All these conveniences were undoubtedly of great assistance to all the teachers and they in turn appreciated the work of the ladies of the Welfare Club. In concluding. His Worship hoped all would have a j very happy and successful afternoon, and thanking the Welfare Club for the opportunity to be pre sent, declared the function open.At this point .the parade commenced. headed with a 'fine display of fancy costumes folk-wedby decorated bicycles, tricycles,perams, carts, numerous pet dogs, cats, lambs, bantams, rabbits,birds, etc. altogether making a large and colorful column.■jThc judges (MeSdaines Owen-Smyth. C. L. H. Pitman and Miss B. Northcote) very ably performed the not very easy task and selected the following prize winners:—FANCY COSTUMESPre School—Robt. Heinrich and G. Hein rich.Mr W. G. Butler acted as gatekeeper.At the conclusion of the judging posies were presented to the judges by Helen Trueman. Peta Woodards and Pam Nethtvay.In conjunction with the Pet Show the Opening' of the Aberdeen Tennis Courts was held and approximately at 4 jfm. the President of the Club (Mr A. L. Clode) extended a welcome to all .present for the occasion and then introduced His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. J. B. Jennison).Mr Jennison' congratulated the Club on the repairs of the courts, which he understood had cost in the vicinity of £100. It was with courts such as these that coilntry people could have the same oppor tunity in sports as those in the cities. The speaker also commented on’ the success of the Tournaments held at Easter and which had been resurrected after a number of years had elapsed owing to war conditions.With these complimentary remarks His Worship declared the courts open for tha forthcoming season and hit the first ball over the net.Afternoon tea was served with the Welfare Club Ladies in attendance, namely Mesdames F. Reed, Pontifcx. Halliday. C. Thomas. Shakeshafl Terry, Tiver and H.
