A Generous Act to a Generous Man’s Generosity. At a meeting of the C. G. Conn Em ployes’ association, held Saturday evening, September 10th, 1892, the f... lowing preamble and resolutions were adopted: WHEREAS, C. W. Miller, of Goshen, having in his speech at South Bend maliciously and falsely stated that our employer, the Hon. C. G. Conn, assaulted one of his employes and violently expelled him from his office for stating an alleged grievance; and furthermore, the said Miller hav ing also grossly misrepresented the proportion of the profits of the fac tory which Mr. Conn generously be stows upon his employes, and which is by them circulated among the mer chants and business men of Wikhart; therefore, be it resolved, That we, the undersigned employes of the Hon. C. G. Conn, de clare such statements to be absolutely false and entirely without foundation, and we denounce their author as a man without honor or regard for the truth. Many of the undersigned have been associated with Mr. Conn as his employer for more than twelve years, and never during that time have we known him other than a kind, gener ous and considerate employer, and on no occasion have we known him to ex ercise violence in any shape or man ner to his employer; and we further denounce the attempt of the said C. W. Miller to belittle the munificence of Mr. Coun in gratuitously distribu ting among his employes the substan tial sum of nine thousand dollars; we, his employer, do not by any means re gard it as a “‘paltry amount,” as C. W. Miller in his characteristic speech designates it. By its aid we are ena bled to procure for our families many things that we should otherwise have been compelled to dispense with, and the merchants and business men of Elkhart among whom this “paltry” nine thousand dollars was circulated, fully appreciated Mr. Conn’s generos ity to his employer. In our own interest we protest against adverse criticism of Mr. Conn’s act in the distribution of a pro portion of his profits among his em ployer. It is an entirely voluntary act on his part, and he is under no legal or moral obligation to continue it, and we realize that if his generosity in this connection is continually abused and misrepresented by the press and from the rostrum, it will no longer be pleasant or to his interest to seek to improve the condition of his employer by continuing to distribute a substan tial sum of money among them each year, and as we, who are most deeply interested, are entirely satisfied with the present arrangement, we earnest ly request the entire community to discountenance any attempt made by malicious persons and a partisan press to menace our interests by dispara ging that benificence which we now enjoy. a W.
