Jays Akron High ‘School’ started their 1973 football season Friday, September 7, in a nonconference game at Le’ Mars Gehlen, Akron suffering a 47-6 defeat. Both teams had numerous furmbles and penalties, nat ural for the first game of the season. The first quarter, Kevin Garvin made a 77 yard sweep out of 4 125 yard total for the scoring points. Le Mars, with a decided size and weight advantage was the best on offensive, racking up a total of 9 fhrst downs to the Raiders 4. Akron did not let the size of the Jays bother them too much and did a good job of defensing on several occasions. Jeff Hissel of Le Mars Gehlen made two touchdown runs and a scoring pass to Dave McCarty. Larry Ryan drove two four and six-yard touchdowns home for Gehlen. An injury, Keith Schiltz, a Le Mars guard, occured near the end of the first quarter. The Akron offensive’ starting line-up was Roonie Wych, center, Bill Harvey and Tom Schnieder, guards, Bruce Ericson and Vance Phillips, tackles, Marlin Harris and, Kirk Miller, enda, Reed Phillips, flanker, Doug Eskra and Kevin Garvin, backs, and Rick Dirks, quarterback. The defensive line-up was Joe Bur dette, named Maurader of the week with tackles, and Vance Phillips, both ends. Tackles were Ronnie Wych and Bruce Eric son, who made ‘6 tackles. Linebackers were Kevin Garvin, Tom Schneider and Bill Harvey. Jerry McDyenna and Doug Eskra, who had 7 tackles, were corner backs. Lafters were Marlin Harris and Reed Phillips.
