Dr. Henry Stewart. Crockett passed away at 3:20 o'clock Tuesday after noon, the end following a brief ill ness of probably four weeks and com ing with such suddenness as to shock his family and large number of warm friends. But a few moments before the death angel laid his sceptre upon him. Dr. Crockett was in cheerful spirits, laughing and talking with his sons at his bedside. Almost without warning he sank up on his pillows,and expired even, physician could’ be called. ‘The announcement of the death of Dr. Crockett was heard throughout the city with profoundest sorrow, for no citizen had ever so endeared him self to an entire people than had this genial and cultured Virginia gentle man. Scarcely two years ago he came ‘here, almost a stranger, to cast his lot in Americus, and within’that time she has won a place in the hearts of all here. A gentleman of the old regime, 0 distinguished ancestry to which he had added lustre in his every walk in life, socially and professionally, as upon the battlefield in defense of his loved Southland—he was a man among men. ‘ Among all he stood a peerless, ideal gentleman. While yet a lad he entered the Confederate army with the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute and remained until the story of Appomat tox, was told and his flag failed for ever. Since coming to Americus Dr. Crockett has successfully practiced his profession in partnership with his son, Dr .Kent Crockett Two other sons, Mr. Duke’ Crockett, of the firm of Allen Crockett, and Prof. Carl ©. Crockett, of the high school faculty, were with him here. Another son and daughter, besides a sister, , Mrs. Raper, well known here, survive him. Prof. Carl Crockett was holding his father’s hand when the end came yes terday, others of the family having just left his bedside. Scarcely two months ago Dr. Crock ett was married to Mrs. M .F. Pres ton in Virginia. She was a sweetheart of early boyhood days and their brief welded life was an ideally happy one and to her, as to others, deep sym pathy is extended. During his recent race Dr. Crock ett was removed to the hospital, and ‘tt was there the end came yesterday. Recently the family removed to the Matthews residence on Furlow street, where he expected to join them short ly, upon his recovery. The funeral services took place here Thursday, after the arrival of other members of the family coming from Virginia.
