' The first now cotton was bought in this city by the Ruffin Mercantile Company. It was grown on the farm of 0. L. McKenzie, residing three miles ea9t of this city. The price paid for the cotton was 12/lt;c, and Mr. McKenzie was presented with a barrel of flour as a premium for the first new bale of cotton bought in this city.
