OKB AT TAHOErailroadAto the Jake, steamers to tow them to the mills upon the other shore, where they are sawed, a railroad nine miles long to carry the lumber to the mountain top, and a flume to float It down to the V, dr T. track. The plan for supplying Boilie with wood and lumber, fa as expensive but less complex. Mills in the timber south of Mono lake are connected with the mines by a narrow guage railroad, which carries all they will ever need. Since Its inception, Mr. Yeiington hs been the executive man of the Virginia A Truckee Railroad, which was for some time under his management, the most succeessful railroad ever built. That is, it was run at the lowest rate of expense In proportion to the gross earning* or any road In history. The Panama road whs the most profitable for years and years, butwhen the Virginia A Truckee was supplying Vnginla during the flush times, It was a little ahead of the Panama road, During these times It Was fashionable io some circles,to abuse Mr. Yerington in * very hearty manner. He was repre-taispiinWicliacStitiutachimfpHovinCOtot.horacexClt;1alintoriwinAaiInccEatlhilrwhlt;ancC'hearty manner, ne was represented to be a hard-hearted monopolist, and no one seemed to have the least compunction about saying the worst things abou£ him and his associates. The decl i ne of the Comstock, and the hard times that have followed, have given Mr. Yeriog-ton many opportunities to prove that he had a heart, and he has shown it time and again. Bates have been lowered where they directly affected the poorer classes, and all sorts of necessaries have fallen in prii e. At one time rail-road rate* were of little importance, ' as no one felt them when money “ was so plenty, but now they cut a , iaiger figure, and a concession is ' often a blessing Those who know rMr. Yeriugtou intimately, say that I “ in private life, he is auythiiig but a * small man. He is not one who “ couits praise, however, and bisIU right hand does not always know what his left hand doeth. It was well known at the time, that he advanced quite a fortune, to help ■ straighten up the business of his r old friend H. F. Rice. One of the |* gentlemen in his office gave the writer several anecdotes illustrating a weakness in hi* armor, which a railroad manager has to guard pretty ,. carefully if he doesn’t wish to be *imposea upon. His deeds of char- ®ity, both large and small, would I* probably surprise many who see I only the live business man in all he r does. There is an easy road to his • heart through the thin shell of S brusqueness, and it is traveled al- J most daily by the unfortunate. In * his own towu, many a poor woman { has seen a load of wood thrown off* J at her doorHhafc she never got a 1 bill for, and provisions, when noone knew where they came from. He has helped many a broken down man, and some of them, it is said, *i«ve turned on hiui and abused him the most. Many a pass has been given for tiue charity that liever was beard of again. In addition to hh lailroad, wood and lumber business, Mr Yerington ha* been quite an active miner, and has made and spent lots of money th±tway. His operations were not confined to the stock board, but hegoodet:E61who are looking for the preciousild ‘ ‘metals. It would be rather inter estiug to publish a list of the titles he bears, none of which are sinecures, but they, numerous as they are, would only show part of the drains upon his time and energy. He is Vice President and General Superintendent of the Virginia Truckee road, President and Generali Superintendent of the Carson A Colorado. He is managing director of the Territorial Enterprise Publishing Company, and takes no little interest in its affairs. It affords some sport for publishers of the little papers of the State to speak of “we newspaper men,” when Mr. Yerington is around. He is director in several mines, and a large partner in the Carson and LTahoe Lumber and Flume Co.. in [the firm ot Yirington, Bliss A Ch., Yferington Htfyhle, and others. Perhaps
