Some Employes Who Have Been Milking the City Treasury Arrested. Burra, N. Y., Oct. 11.—Three men have been arrested, charged with em bezzling large amounts of money from the city by padding payrolls of the street bureau with dummy names. The prisoners are Howard D. Herr, cashier of the department of public works; John M. Danahy, deputy superintendent of streets, and Joseph Burke, formerly an inspector of streets and now a saloon keeper. Herr is prominent in political and social circles, and a popular man about town Danabhy is a son of Michael Danahy, a well known export buyer of livestock. The salaries of both were $1,500 a year. The amount of their alleged peculations is not known, but it is alleged that it runs up into thousands of dollars. The warrants for their ar rest were sworn out by the mayor’s private secretary, on information laid before his honor by George F. Matthews, proprietor of The Express. It is said that other arrests will follow.
