NOLTE M’ELROY, 19, IS VICTIM OF D. K. E. INITIA TION; OTHER BOYS UNHARMED BY SAME HAZING (By The Associated Press.) AUSTIN, Oct. 1.—Members of the Della Kappa Ep silon fraternity at Texas University probably will be called before the Travis county grand jury, convening today, for questioning concerning the death of a 19-year-old pledge, Nolte McElroy of Houston, by electrocution during his initiation Sunday night. District Attorney J. D. Moore, who satisfied himself last night as to circumstances in the case, indicated, how ever, that the grand jury investigation will be mainly a fiancene Liter AUETNALTILye McElroy, a member of the* University football squad, fainted as he started to crawl between two pairs of bed springs connected through a rheostate to city lighting wires. He died shortly after ward at a hospital. Five other boys had gone un harmed through this part of the initiation before him. During the last 15 years, 184 initiates have taken the shock without ill effect, a fraternity statement last night said. This was confirm ed today by John W. Cal houn, uiversity comptroller, a Delta Kappa Epsilon mem ber, Dean V. J. Moore of the University, said today that there will be no no tion in the case, as far as he knows, by University authorities. “It simply was a terrible accident that could not have been foreseen,” he said, “The boys have been doing that sort of Initiation stunt for years and no one dreamed of any element of danger in it” No request Planned No inquest will be held, Piatplet Attorney J. D. Moore said. He ex pressed a view of the occurence practically the same as Dean Moore. The victim’s parents were expected here from Houston about noon. The other boys who had gone through the bed spring stunt before McElroy without ill effect were Marion Mebley, Houston, Dan Parker, Groesbeck, Hutton Shearer, Houston, Paul Mattison, Dallas, and Pouginn Newton, Del Rio. The pledges were requested to eat a raw oyster, soaked in castor oil, on an other part of the initiation. Pronounced Fit McElroy had been examined by a physician on hie application for mem bership on the football squad and had been pronounced in perfect condi tion, the fraternity statement said, Physicians who attended MeElroy said that ordinarily the shock of the contact with the house lighting wires would not cause death, but might in some cases. Fraternity men said the rheostat, which increases and de creases the current, had not been turned fully to its 116 volt maximum when McElroy was found to have fainted.
