Bottineau-Baldwin, a three-quarter Ojibwav Indian lawyer, has been spending a few days as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kershaw, Woodlawn-ct. Mrs. Baldwin has been traveling among the Indian agencies and schools in the interest of the Society of American Indians. She has recently visited the White Earth, Cass Lake, Leach Lake and Pipestone agencies and schools in Minnesota; the Bismark and Wahpeton m North Dakota, and the Pierre and Flandreau in South Dakota.Suffer from Cold.\“It has been very cold, and there have been severe frosts at every place I visited,” said Mrs. Baldwin. “The potatoes are allfrozen, and corn in the milk destroyed,The wild rice crop, too, on which the Indian depend for much of their white: food supply, has been destroyed.”“T he Indians, I am glad to say havebeen recognized in almost all of this year’s state fairs. They prepared fine exhibits andreceived much commendation for them,especially those at Huron, S. D. Minneapo-01 is, Minn., and the Wisconsin fair at Mil-waukee.”• •Mrs. Baldwin's grandfather was of onehalf Indian and one half French Huguenot decent. His name was Pierre Bottineau, and lie was one of the first voyageu.s m dih ...wc. t, a:.-.! .;j.. ! -twotrips with the Lewis and Clark expedition. He was also guide for Guv. Isaac Stephenson, at one time governor of Washington,and who made treaties with the Indians. Her great-grandfather came to this country with 'Peter Faneuil of Faneoil hall fame. Pierre Bottineau married a full-blooded Indian of the Reindeer clan of the. Chijway tribe. His son, John B. Bottineau, Mrs., * f rBaldwin’s father, was a well known in Jiao. slawyer and prosecuted the Turtle mountainIndian case, in which the Indians sued the government for more than 11,000.000 acres of land which had been thrown openforsct-tlement without compensation to Indians. 'Congress at that time appropriated #1,000, 000 less than 10 cents an acre, as a paymenttfor the seizure, and this is now being paid in yearly installments.Studied Law at 4-9.Mrs. Baldwin began the study of law when she was 49, two years ago.
