For Every School in the County— Case of Books Furnished on Application. Generosity of the State in Providing Readl ine Matter—Township Teachers Asked to Organise Suggestion to Teach ers’ Union. The importance of good lterature for the home and school has more than once been referred to in the columns of this paper. That every school In Athens county may have “access to wholesome, elevating reading matter is shown In the provisions made for the traveling lbra ries by the thoughtfulness and generosity of Ohio. These traveling libraries, pro vided by the state, are within reach of every child in every school in the county. The plan for securing these books from the State Librarian at Columbus is made easy. Let the teachers of the township schools organize and appoint librarian who upon application to State Librarian Galbreath at Columbus will receive the necessary blanks, instructions, and 2 list s books from which to select for the use # the school. The only cost to the school will be the express charges which could be paid with a penny collection from pupils or parents. A list of twenty-five to Afty books may be selected and the school has the privilege of keeping them three months. These books are not selected at hap hazard by the state Abrarian, but are chosen by the local or township Abrarian whose experience and discretion enables him to select the reading matter suitable to the age, taste and capacity of the pupils. In the list of books sent by the state librarian there are found reading matter anstable to all grades, from the primary to the advanced pupils. The organization of all the teachers in a township, as suggested above, is merely arbitrary, and probably a more feasible plan world, be the organizing of every school district with the selection of the teacher as librarian. In this way every school, with its forty oe Hfty pupils, would have access to the entire lst of books selected. The disadvantage of an organi zation covering a whole township, would ve the local Abrarian’s ability to get thebooks properly distributed. With the selection of the teacher as Abrarian in each district would enable the pupils of that school to have the benefit of the books for the full three months. From this tts seen that good bools, the very cream of lterature, is easily accessible to every school run the county. In the graded schools In the cities and towns a fairly good Worary is usually found, but by the wise and generous provision of the state the graded urbania and the district schools now without lbraries are pro vided with splendid reading matter, thus giving them an advantage equal to that of the city schools with the library facil ties. This provision of the state is especi ally aimed to benefit the district school which heretofore in Athens county has shown a lamentable scarcity of reading matter for its pupils. Now is the time to receive the benefit of the state's gener osity. If you are a teacher [run a district schol organize today, don't put it off un il tomorrow or next” week. Send to “State Librarian Galbreath at Columbus if blanks for application; with the blanks he will send a list of books. With the blanks properly filed out and returned, the teacher or local librarian can select a list of books desired for his school. The only cost will be the express or freight charges from Columbus and returno when the reading of the books had been com pleted at the end of three months or be fore. . With the arrival of the case of books the teacher has a task before him. The distribution of the books can be system atically done, and the utmost dscretion should be exercised in giving out books suitable for certain ages. The teacher should personally supervise this work and see that 20 pupils permitted to have more than one in his possession at the same time. A careful record should be kept of the time when the book is taken out by the pupil and when it is returned. The time any volume should be kept by a pupil should remain optional with the teacher or Librarien. The return of the book should be insisted upon, thus en abling 23 many pupileas possible to read it within the three months limit. The initial meeting of the Teachers' Union will be held in this city next Sat urday. anaitin here urgently suggested that the subject of the traveling libra ry be taken up and discussed at that meeting of Athens county teachers. Not only should it be discussed, but immedi ate action should be taken in carrying out in a practical manner this most excellent plan of providing wholesome, instructive and devatisk reading matter for the ‘schuol youth of the county. The Teach ers’ Union could not do a better thing than to work for the traveling library.
