The annual football banquet for mem bers of the Akron High school squad and their coaches was held at The Biltmore in Sioux City on Wednesday evening of last week, with approximately eighty per sons in attendance. Following a delicious Continental dinner a short program was held. Bob Pollock again served as master - of - ceremonies, making the fifteenth consecutive time he has done the job. He introduced head football coach Denny Van Berkum, who gave a resume of the 1972 season then introduced the members of the 1972 squad. He concluded by announcing the various squad awards, with Joe Burdette being named the most improved player, Kevin Garvin the most valuable player, Dave Heeren as all conference center, Denny Feauto, Jerome Haage, Kevin Garvin, Mark Heeren and Marlin Harris having received all-con ference honorable mention and Doug Eskra, Kevin Garvin and Marlin Harris being elected as tri-captains for next year. Mr. Pollock next called upon Henry Krause to introduce the main speaker of the evening, Joe Salem, head football coach at the University of South Dakota, at Vermillion. Mr. Salem proved to be a mighty interesting and capable speaker, and he provided the boys with some very fine advice to follow in their participation in football and admonished them to con tinue to give their best in that and to continue it throughout their entire life time. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. Pollock asked that a committee be formed to carry on the tradition of the football banquet for next year, as it was his wish to be relieved of the job of organizing fame. Three of those present, Don Caskey, Art Coon and Paul Krohn, volunteered to serve as a committee to see to it that a similar affair would be staged at the con clusion of the 1973 season. Lost, strayed or stolen—A want-ad will find it for you.
