STATISTICS OF GAME A determined, fired-up group of Akron High School football players put it all to gether and wound up with a well-earned 18 to 6 victory over the Boyden-Hall High Comets in the final game of the season here on Friday evening of last week. Both teams entered the game on a winless sea son, and there was plenty of determination evident on the part of both squads, but the Akron boys had considerably more of what it takes and came out on top. The win ended a nineteen-game losing streak for the Raiders, and there was much jubilation on the part of the Akron squad, coaches, stu dents and fans. Both teams played it cautious at the start, but late in the first quarter a punt by B-H was gathered in by Kevin Garvin on the Akron 45 and he scampered to the right behind a wall of Raider blockers and scooted the full 55 yards for the touch down. A line plunge for the extra points failed, and Akron held a 6 to 0 lead. Boyden-Hull countered with a touchdown early in the second period after a penalty had given them the ball near midfield. They moved well on the ground to the Akron 2-yard line, from where Steve Reekers plunged across, Reekers was stopped on his line plunge for the extra points, and the score remained deadlocked at 6-all. Late in the second quarter a pass interception gave B H the ball on the Akron 7, but four plays later they sur rendered the ball to Akron’s defensive crew on the Raider 8. Akron moved to a first down on their 23, but a holding penalty set them back to their 8, then on the very next play Garvin broke away on a slant over tackle and scampered 92 yards for Akron's second touchdown. Again the extra point was stopped short, and the Raiders carried a 12 to 6 lead into the halftime intermission. There was no scoring in the third quar ter, but Akron had another Garvin touch down nullified on a clipping penalty, and the Raiders had another real threat going when Bill Harvey pounced on a B-H fumble on the Comet 21. Boyden-Hull braced and stalled the Raiders and took over the ball on downs on their 11-yard line. Denny Feauto's fumble recovery on the BH 21 gave the raiders another scoring opportunity at the start of the fourth quar ter, but once again the Coments met the test and stopped Akron on their 1-footline. Moments later Reid Philips' punt return carried the ball to the BH 22, but there was a 1b-yard clipping penalty on the play. but this did not dim Akron's efforts. With Doug Eskra and Garvin doing the carrying, the Raiders moved to a first down on the Comet 10. Philips carried to the 7, then two more tries by Eskra made it to the 5. On the next play it was Eskra circling left end on a quarterback power sweep to plunge across for the touchdown. Again it was no-go on the extra point try, and the score stood at 18 to 6. The game ended moments later with Akron again in pos session of the ball near midfield. Friday night's game ended the football careers for seven members of the Akron High squad. They are Jay Miller, Dave Knecht, Dennis Feauto, Mark Heeren, Dave Heeren, Jerome Haage and Scott Klemme. All of these young men played well through out their High school years, and will cer tainly be missed when another season rolls around. A number of the Akron High squad turned in outstanding performances against Boyden Hull, especially on defense. Among these were Mark Heeren, Bill Harvey, Doug Eskra, Kevin Garvin, Jerome Haage, Denny Feauto, Bruce Ericson, Marlin Harris and Joe Burdette. Most of these boys are underclassmen, and will be a round for at least one more season. So another football season has passed into history here, and while it was on the dismal side as far as wins and losses are concerned, yet we can be sure that the boys who participated learned many les sons that will stand them in good stead in years to come. It's always nice to wind up a season on a winning note, and you may be sure that, having had a late taste of victory, the boys who return will want to continue it.
