Good early times at benefit race SundayThe weather may have been more suitable for football than harness racing but a good crowd turned out nevertheless for Sunday’s benefit harness racing show at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds. All proceeds from the event have been earmarked for a special fond to help pay for the recent resurfacing of the half mile fairgrounds track.And in spite of the temperature which dipped into the 50s and 15 to 20 mph winds, the fans were treated to some top notch early season times, and a trio of photo finishes..In the first race, the Ed Reding stables captured a one-two finish, with I Imagine, driven by Bart Ennen, winning it by a whisker over his stable mate Kemal Jim, driven by Bruce Ennen, in a time of 2:42. tThe second, race, the first start for five three-year-old pacers, was another close one. This time is was the Alvin Ennen Stable of Gilmore City going against the John Nessa Stable of Thor, with Bruce Ennen guiding Common Tac to a 2:35 time, to nip Shawn Nessa and. Red Cedar Winter by a nose.The third race was another one for the fans, Leigh Ennen driving M.J.’s Bob to a photo finish over Paul Kampen Stable’s K K Daytime, driven by Butch Desen. Ihe winning time was 2:42.The times started coining down in thefourth race, a nip and tuck affair between two entries from the Dasen stables and driven by Harry Dasen and his son Butch. Harry with Miss H B Cash led most of the way before being caught at the wire by Butch driving Bye Dawn, in a time of 2:16.3.Race 5, the Free-For-All Trot, saw A, J. Son hammer his way to a one-length win over Game Try in a time of 2:16, much faster than expected considering the time of year. Glen Mino of Swea City guided A. J. Son.And in the final race of the day, Don Cronk and Countess A set the early pace, but it was Hamrick, driven by Shawn Nessa, in another outstanding 2:16, at the wire by a neck over Sand Pedro, driven by Harry Dasen.AU those participating Sunday, including drivers arid owners, donated their time and. horse flesh for the benefit. Providing the starting gate and sound system was Jean JOeve, while Verne Baker served as chief timer, John Cook as presiding judge, and Allen Sandbolte as assistant judge.
