eee taaehheekh eh The Red Cross girls” attached to an American Hospital ‘near: ‘Cairo are ‘fulfilling their task: of lightening the hourg: of ‘patients: so thoroughly that the medical corps has a hard time convincing the convalescents they’re well enough to quit. There are five of them on the job and their duties cover a pretty wide field. Head of the unit, is Miss Joan McKenna who, aided by Miss Betty Tanner combines the duties of being diplomat, banker, information bureau, Florence Nightingale and the chief link between families back home and the patients. Miss Rita, Hurley and Miss Edna Tarr see that the patients have plenty to do in their spare time or rather that they have none. Miss Tarr organizes the tours. The gla mor of the cast is wearing pretty thin for her after having seen the pyra mids for umpteenth time, but the boys all agree she is bearing up under the strain. Handcraft, which is or ganised under army supervision, also comes under Miss Tarr's manage ment. Miss Hurley arranges all the pro grams put on in the Red Crags Re creation Hall which is a small thea tre used for movies, parties, lectures and even language lessons. French lessons have been going on for two weeks now, and the pupils are look ing forward to a trip to Paris in the near future. Miss Wilma is the fifth member of this hard working quintet and acting secretary and film of all trades. Special Services, working together with the Red Cross, is planning tennis, badminton and other sports to help the convalescents get the exercise necessary for their quick recovery. Movie shows are organized n those wards where there a large number of bedfast patients and re creation equipment is supplied for all words. Checkers, dominoes, Chi nege checkers, jigsaw puzzles, play ing cards cribbage boards, ping-pon and a gramophone cover pretty nearly every aspect of entertain ment permissible to humans in a not too robust state of health. Next door to the theatre is a library provided with books, magazines and dailies. In the five months they’ve been here the members of this Red Cross Unit have made a whole lot of diffe rence in the comfort of the boys staying in the hospital.
