A student from Leeds was among those who won top honors in the recent Annual High School Chemistry Contest, sponsored by the Central Utah Section of the American Chemical Society. Contest coordinator Dr. Delbert J. Eatough of the Brigham Young University Center for Thermochemical Studies, said a teacher from Dixie High School was among those honored for excellence in chemistry education as a result of the scores his students achieved in the contest. He said 20 students from 12 high schools competed in 2 two hour chemistry examination on chemistry principles covering both regular and advanced high school instruction. ‘The four top winners were Damel Joseph Lee of Dixie High School, John B. Hunting of Vernal, Reed O. Jeffrey of Delta and Andrew Winkler of Orem. ‘The four educators to be recognized for excellence in teaching were Ross Taylor of Dixe High School, Martin Monson of Orem High School, Fay Jacobson of Delta High and Albert Johnson of Provo High. Fifteen other students received certificates of merit in the competition, Dr. Eatough announced. All winners received subscriptions to “‘Chemistry”’ magazine and the top winners were awarded copies of the “CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.” Other students to receive honors were George W. Spencer Jr. of St. George and Dale Jensen of Cedar City.
