Hoys of tender year-are to be wvu dailv inhaling tin* poisonous fumes of tin* deadly cigarette. and the consequence of such \ niithfiil indulgence iH only too apparent. I In* \ irtoria Tiuifu, in a late issue, makes the following pertinent remarks eoiirerning the cigarette evil. It savs: “There is agood deal of talk going the rounds on the evils of cigarette smoking, and unquestionably there are grounds for it. lo-hacco in any form is injurious to youth, und is especially deleterious when used in the form of cheap cigarettes. I In* fault, however, does not lie with the cigarette vender, but rather with the parent of the juvenile purchaser. If a bit of personal reminiscence, for tin* sake of illustrating our point, is allowable, we shall say that memory takes us hack to the period when we used to beg tobacco of the hired man, pulverize it. and wrap it in paper and smoke it. Too impecunious to buy a pipe, and unable to conceal it if we had one, we evolved the cigarette from our brain, but unfortunately lacked the business foresight, to take out a patent for it. Hut our inventivegenius alas, was not appreciated in the domestic circle. The odor of tobacco smoke so attached itself to our person that the paternal relative got on to it, and after a brief inquisition with a view to extracting an oral confession of guilt a large leathern strap was vigorously manipulated across our hack. This thrashing, coupled with the remark of the'governor,' that no boy of his should use tobacco before he way twenty-one, it strappings would prevent it, reduced our cigarette smoking to an unconsciously low minimum, and now we are glad that our knowledge of tobacco was very superficial until we came somewhere near maturity. Parents of the latter generation seem to have lost their grip on their children, and fathers and mothers in their helplessness would seek the aid of legislation to assist them in a purely family affair. As a rule it is useless to reason with a boy under fourteen, lie must be thrashed into obedience and if parents haven’t the backbone to enforce their prerogative let them suffer tin* consequences. There is no doubt if parents took hold of this matter as they should, enforcing home discipline by a judicious combine tion of advice and the strap, tin* Halt* of cigarettes to bovs would naturally fall off.It is the parents which the newspapers should lecture not the cigarette vendors.hat represcmavenpvi in mi is, lit Idemmasspcasi form: in listin ea politi cd lilthin).andTntin* I1gramgcntldent,Mr. I Wolfgcntltill 01Tradthericitv’f*orgaiprovi and ’ depaprouvaneOn:Mon.Tue«iWYili Tli ii r Fri»l:iS.iiiiiFcM:/liN(EDITORIAL NOTES.M anBoil.11 yd
