Ramsey Drug Trial Starts MondayThe cocaine smuggling trial of Destin resident Lee M. Ramsey, 59, and two other men will begin at 9:30 a.m. next Monday, May 6 in the U.S. District Court in Pensacola.Authorities say they found evidence in Ramsey’s Holiday Isle townhouse last Nov. 22 which link him with a suspected drug smuggling plane and the death of a South Carolina man found locked in an Okaloosa Island motel room.Eric Winter, 35, was found dead last Nov. 16 in the Okaloosa Island Holiday Inn. An autopsy revealed he did from a lethalinjection of cocaine.Ramsey, along with Mark A. Bellamy and Richard Harris, is charged with illegally importing cocaine, conspiring to import cocaine, conspiring to possess cocaine for distribution and possessing cocaine.In a raid on Ramsey ’s townhouse, authorities found plastic tubing and navigational equipment which they say link him with a twin-engine Cessna that landed at the Destin Airport last Nov.15.U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson on Thursday denied a motion by Ramsey to have items confiscated during the raid on his townhouse dismissed as evidence in the trial. Ramsey’s motion claimed law enforcement officials took more in the raid than the search warrant entitled them to.
