FIRE LOSS AT I. B. S. ESTIMATED AT $6,000Stables, Two Mules, Horse, and FeedBurned, Saturday Night.•1 11 ■ *A ?6,000 loss, including damage to barn and loss of two mules and one horse, resulted from the fire at the Indiana boys’ school, Saturday evening.The discovery was made and the alarm given at twenty minutes after 8 o’clock, by Oran Stanley, just after the boys had retired. The chief engineer was in Plainfield, ■* but hurried to the school when notified, and in tea minutes had raised the necessary pressure for the fire pump. Other officers who were in Plainfield hastened to the scene and rendered every possible service. The Plainfield firemen volunteered their services and greatly assisted the officers In saving other property which was endangered.The fire started in the west part of the north mow and appeared to haver developed suddenly as the night-watchman passed the barn on his usual route at 8:10, and other officers passed at 8:15, and saw no sign of the fire which had gained considerable headway when discovered five minutes later.The original structure of the barn, which was built of brick, was completely destroyed, although the adjoining part was saved because of the brick partition. Other loss included about 40 tons of timothy hay and a quantity of shredded fodder, which continued to smolder until late Tuesday night. About 13 head of horses and seven head of mules were rescued.The cause of the fire is unknown. Two boys, Manning and Watts, who escaped from the dormitory about midnight Friday night, are suspected of the crime.Manning is said to have caused considerable trouble while in the school. A few months ago he struck one of the officers on the head with one of the guns used in military drills. The boys escaped in their night apparel, but it is thought that they had previously hid clothing to wear after their escape, which was made through the attic and out on the roof, then down the fire escape.The school officials appreciate the assistance rendered by the firemen and others.
