Suggests Three Steps To Learn More of UFOsObservers Of UFOs Afraid Of Public RidiculeBy BUD TOURTELLOTTE Northwestern Staff WriterOne of the most formidable roadblocks in the path of private investigators seeking the answer to the UFO riddle is an almost universal fear of public ridicule on the part of observ-Those who still think only “nuts accept the possibility of the UFO may change their minds after reading the following quotations from prominent scientists, statesmen, legislators, military men, pilots anu others-Dr. Hermann Oberth, German rocket and space travel authority: “I believe the flying saucers come from other worlds Discoverer of Planet Dr. Clyde W. Tombaugh, discoverer of the planet Pluto, has sighted UFOs. “These things, which do appear to be directed, are unlike any other phenomena 1 ever observed. Other stars in our galaxy may have hundreds of thousands of inhabitable worlds Races on these worlds may have been able to utilize the tremendous amounts of power required to bridge the space between the stars.”Dr. Carl .Jung, famed Swiss psychologist. ... the evidence available is convincing enough to arouse a continuous and fervent interest ”Rep. John W. McCormack, House majority leader and former chairman of the Senate committee on outer space: “We could not get much information . . . although it is pretty much established in our minds that there were some objects flying around in space that were unexplainable.”Capt. W. B. Nash. Pan American Airways pilot who, with his co-pilot, saw eight discs maneuver below their airplane- “I believe they were controlled machines from outer space.”Capt. James Howard, British Overseas Airways pilot who. with his crew and 12 passengers, saw one huge UFO and six smaller ones; “It must have been a space ship.”Objects Do Exist Air Chief Marshal Lord Dow-dmg. Royal Air Force- “I am convinced that these objects do exist and that they are not manufactured by any nation on earth. They must come from some extraterrestial source.”Air Marshal Sir George Jones, Royal Austrialian Air Force who sighted a UFO- “Nothing can shake my belief in what 1 fiptv.” Vice Adm. R. H. Hilienkoet-ter. USN, retired; “The public has a right to know where the UFOs come from, what they are . . My impression is that the Air Force is withholding information ... We need a Congressional investigation.”The state of public apathy toward the origin and nature of I hose strange machines, if that is what they are, is proof enough oF this. The Air Force wastes no tune rushing in to the area of mass sighting to “investigate” the claims of those sincere persons who report a UFO. The objects reported are almost always immediately labeled as seagulls, weather balloons, known aircraft, sw’amp gas or gas-filled pillow cases, inferring that up to 200 local citizens are simultaneously wrong This possibility seems to be more remote than the wildest theories on the UFOs themselves700 Unexplained There aie some 700 UFO sightings on record that even the USAF has been unable to explain. Those 700 inexplicable sightings may constitute the beckoning finger of the greatest mystery m man's entire span on earth They raise many questions-What guides them here’ Why do they come0 Are they a natural nr artificial phenomena0 If artificial. then by those hand’ Are they friendly or hostile0 Of what magnificent alloys arc they const rue led” From whal untapped source does their tremendous motive power stem’’There are two earnest organizations devoted to uncovering the answers. One is the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, 1536 Connecticut Ave., N.W, Washington. 36 D C The other is the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization, 391ft E Kleindale Rd., Tucson, Ariz Both devote full-time to sifting, analyzing and disseminating information on the UFO; and attempting to draw some valid conclusions on this strange subject. Both are nonprofit groups.Give Full Information If at any time you have seen a UFO, contact one or both of the above named agencies, or Dr. Allen Utke, 1825 Oak St., Oshkosh.Investigation At PresentIs IncompleteBy ALLEN R. UTKEWhere do we go from here After a careful review of the ur resolved questions in the UFt controversy, the overall pictur seems to be as confusing as i ever was. In the midst of th confusion, two facts do nov seem to be clear:First, it is very difficult tlt; prove that most of the peopl who report UFOs have not seet “something.”Second, it is very difficult h prpve that the “something” seer was not a real object. The shots were made from inside a truck with a Polaroid camera used by Heflin to photograph highway hazards and damage. The Air Force claimed that Heflin used a model—one to three feet in diameter—but expert outside evaluations reject the AF charge, calling it unfounded and further describe the AF explanation of the pictures a$ impossible. —nicap photoChester Pingry Named To Specialist in Reading OfficeA Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh instructor of education has been named to the newly-created post of state specialist in reading and English with the Wisconsin department of public instruction. He is Chester A. For obviously, we now have a game where the stakes are so high that we can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. If the UFOs are due to some new natural phenomenon, an answer to the controversy could lead to new scientific knowledge of inestimable value. On the other hand, if the UFOs are from outer space, our planet could stand on the verge of the greatest scientific, philosophical, and religious discoveries of all time. The government approach now in use in investigating UFOs probably just isn’t complete enough. The story has been told of the scientist who used a tivo-inch mesh net to study the ocean and came to the conclusion that the ocean contained no fish smaller than two inches in size. With regard to UFOs, maybe we too should make our net tighter.A congressional committee should investigate the whole question and make recommendations for further study. But an investigation of this type is very unlikely without more public pressure for it than is evident now. What else could be done? The following three-step approach to the problem could lead to its solution:1. The government should stimulate and encourage public scientific debate on the whole controversy. Along with this, if there are any secret government reports on UFOS, they should be made public, or at least made available to these scientists.2. The current Air Force Project Bluebook investigation should be expanded and coordinated to t.he efforts of other governments. The sky should be put under constant surveillance everywhere in the world Perhaps we could then pinpoint any worldwide patterns that, might exist in the UFO sightings.Should Plan tor Contact3. The government should draw' up a plan to try to contact the UFOs as if they were from outer space. What harm could this do even if it turns out that they aren't0The public is already supporting a governmental investigation of UFOs Supplementing this with the above approach would involve relatively little added expense to the taxpayer, especially if the services of such people as ham radio operators and amateur astronomers were utilized Perhaps even the UN. would help Let’s invest a little more time and money in this question. It’s admittedly a gamble, but the stakes could be even higher than wc realize.
