PORTLAND, Ore (AP) — William (Butch) Van Breda Kolff, coach of Princeton's sur prising Tigers, was named Coach of the Year Friday by the 1L. Basketball Writers Asso ciaton Van Breda Kolff was not present when the award was announced by Irving Marsh of the New York Herald Tribune at the annual banquet of the Na tional Association of Basketball Coaches Van Breda Kolff, a former pro player, directed his Tigers in the semifinals of the NCAA na tional tournament against Mich igan Friday night Princeton, sparked by All- America Bill Bradley, has won the Ivy League championship for three straight years under Van Breda Kolff and is the first Ivy League team to make the national semifinals since Dart mouth did it during World War I. Joe Lapchick, veteran of St John’s, New York, was named metropolitan Coach of the Year by the New York Basketball Writers’ Association Lapehick, who retires at the end of this season, has his team in the finals of the National In vitation Tourney in New York The award was made to the coach who made the greatest contribution to his team’s suc cess over the 1964-65 season
