Home owners who wish to preserve the high character of their neighborhood are apparently destined to make many journeys to the board hearings at City Hall. The high importance of the pend ing ordinance should arouse public interest, in order that it may not im pair the general welfare of the city, endanger the health of its inhabi tants, discourage the most appropri ate use of land within the city, de preciate the value of property, in crease congestion in the streets and WAYS. Cale undue concentration of population, reduce the supply of light and air by improper regulation of the location, use and height of buildings and the areas of open spaces about them, or increase the hazard from fire. The zoning ordinance at present in effect—adopted 1924—was marred by a stupid blunder which permitted too extensive development of retail busi ness ‘along Massachusetts avenue, be tween Harvard and Porter ‘squares, and which has thereby seriously dam aged residential property along the avenue.
