BY DANA BALASH HUBBARD—Every high school basketball team has a dream of competing for a state title. For the Hubbard Lady Eagles basketball squad that dream will not materialize this year nor will one for Regionals, as the locals dropped a hard fought 55-53, decision to Boar dman last Friday night. With the loss the Lady Eagles end their season with an 18-4 record while Boardman moves onto Regional play, Thursday night against Dresden Tri- Valley at Massillon Perry High School. The Eagles earned the right to play the Spartans with a 50-47 win over top seeded and undefeated Conneaut, while Boardman beat Warren Har ding, 63-61. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Spartans and extended it to four points, 6-2 with 4:38 remaining in the first frame. At the 5:48 mark of that period Cara Hendrix, who finished with 20 points, hit a five footer to give her the honor of being the first player in school history, male or female to break the 1,006 point barrier. Hendrix finishes her career with a 1,019 points a record that she set in three years. At the end of the first frame the Spartans led 13-10. Boardman extended their lead to three points, 17-14 with 5:53 left until intermission, but a four point spurt by the Eagles saw them regain the lead, 18-17 with just under five minutes left. Both teams matched performances and things were knotted at 23 at half. The Spartans garnered the first four points of the third period and never trailed again. At that point they were up 27-23. The Spartans led by as many as seven, 36-29, at the end of three. The Spartans then opened up their biggest lead of the game, 13 points, 49-36 with 3:28 left in the game. The Lady Eagles then started to make their move as they cut the deficit to five points, 51-46 with 1:18 left. Shannon McNally then hit a jumper for the Spartans pushing the lead back out to seven, 53-46, with 1:11 remaining The fate then collected the next three points to cut the margin to four 53-49 with :25 left in the game. JoAnn Dzuary then hit two free throws pushing the lead back to six, 55-49. The Lady Eagles then collected another basket with :16 left and their final coming at the 3 mark. Lisa Hickman and Tiffany Chill paced the Spartans with 14 and 11 points, while Missy Balash added 12 for the Lady Eagles. Amy Madeline and Jenny Currie each picked up five in the loss. The Eagles gained the right to meet Boardman with a 50-47 win over Conneaut. The Eagles led by as many as 15 points and held off a comeback effort by Conneaut. Cara Hendrix paced the Eagles with 25 points followed by Missy Balash with 11. Conneaut placed three people in double digits with Heidi Litwiler collecting 18 while Stacey Cover and Stacey Maleckar each collected 10 points a piece.
